SCOTTISH BOYS' MATCH-PLAY

CHAMPION

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) will enroll at East Tennessee State University in the autumn as Scottish boys' Under-18 match-play champion.

Michael, picture right by courtesy of Tom Ward, won the title at Southerness Golf Club on the Solway Firth today, beating Paul Shields (Kirkhill) by 8 and 7 in the 36-hole final.

After an evenly contested 15 holes in the morning, Stewart was only one up. But he made his winning move by birdieing the 16th, getting an eagle at the 17th and a winning par at the 18th.

Stewart had surged into a four-hole lunchtime lead and there was no way back for Shields when Stewart went five up at the second hole of the second round.
