LOCAL BARASSIE KNOWLEDGE PAYS
OFF FOR STUART ROBIN

Local knowledge helped Kilmarnock Barassie's Stuart Robin to figure prominently at today's (Monday) qualifying competition at the Ayrshire links for the Scottish WaterAird 36-hole pro-am over the same course on May 7 and 8.
Robin tied on two-under-par 70 with Derek Watters (Gourock) and Jamie Stevenson (Braehead) at the head of the 25 qualifiers from a field of 92.
Stuart had five birdies, at the sixth, seventh, eighth, 14th and 16th in halves of 34 and 36. He also had three bogeys, at the ninth, 10th and 11th
Stevenson had birdies at the first, foufrth, 12th and 16th with bogeys at the seventh and eighth in halves of 36 and 34.
Watters had fewer birdies and made fewer mistakes than Robin and Stevenson. Derek birdied the first, 13th and 16th and bogey only the 10th in halves of 35.
Gary Dingwall (Royal Dornoch), the fourth best qualifier on 71, had an eagle 3 at the 491yd, par-5 16th in an inward 35.
Only three of the nine players who returned 75s qualified. On a card countback, Stuart Kerr (Strathaven), Gareth Hardy (Dundonald Links) and Peter Mitchell (Hermitage) survived but Donald McKay (Wellsgreen), James McGhee (Turnhouse0, Paul Malone (Braid Hills), Iain Colquhoun (Dundonald Links), Stephen Lamb (Broomieknowe) and Stephen Forbes (Deaconsbank) were eliminated.
Biggest "name" among the non-qualifiers was the 1984 British boys champion Lee Vannet (Carnoustie Golf Links) on the 77 mark, the same mark as the 2002 Scottish boys' match-play champion, Steven Brown, also playing out of Carnoustie Golf Links.
