Scotland international James Byrne from Banchory, a student at Arizona State University, dropped back from joint eighth place to a share of 36th place in a field of 87 with one round to go in the Thunderbird Invitational college golf tournament over the par-71, 7057yd Karsten course at Tempe, Arizona.
Byrne, pictured right, has had rounds of 69 and 77 for four-over-par 146 and is 10 shots behjind leader Kyle Nielsen (New Mexico).
For the second day in a row, the Scot had two double bogeys, at the seventh and 18th in halves of 37-40, compared with the ninth and the 12th in first-round halves of 37 and 37.
Another former Scottish boys' open stroke-play champion, Mark Lamb from Haddington, a student at Arizona University, started the final round in joint 56th place after rounds of 73 and 76 for 149. Lamb has had three double bogeys so far, including the fourth and 16th in his second round.
In the team event, Arizona State (558) lead from Arizona State B (565) with Colorado State (568), Denver (569), Oregon (572), Texas A&M (576), Arizona and Baylor (both 579) in a field of 16 teams.
