Mickelson loses play-off in Scottsdale, Arizona

BIRDIE-BIRDIE FINISH ... IT'S
ELEMENTARY FOR US PGA
TOUR WINNER HOLMES

J B Holmes achieved his second US PGA Tour victory by edging out World No 2 Phil Mickelson in a play-off to win the FBR Open at Scottsdale, Arizona.
Holmes birdied the 18th hole twice in the space of 20 minutes to claim his first triumph since winning at the same course as a rookie in 2006.
"I didn't have my best stuff today, but I fought and I hung in there and I made it when I needed to," said the 25-year-old Holmes after draining a six-footer on the first play-off hole to claim his second career title.
"I came through and I won. I didn't give up. I played hard and when I needed to make it, I did."

Holmes held a three-shot lead midway through the final round of the $6million event but needed a birdie on the final hole to finish at 14 under par 270 over the par-71 course.
Holmes and Mickelson then headed back to the 18th for the play-off and both players found the middle of the fairway from the tee.
Mickelson's three-wood left him 137 yards to the hole while Holmes crushed a 355yd drive to finish 73 yards from the flag before a flawless finish.
It was an aggressive approach by Holmes, who had endured a mixed final round in making four birdies and four bogeys for an even-par 71.
Mickelson, who started the day four shots adrift, carded a four-under 67, and was philosophical in defeat.
"Starting the day I would have gladly taken getting into a play-off, but I've got to give JB a lot of credit for birdieing the last hole and birdieing again in the play-off," added Mickelson. "That's pretty impressive golf."
