North-east Alliance

PHILIP McLEAN SPARKLES TO WIN AT

CRAIBSTONE BY THREE SHOTS

FROM COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scottish youth international Philip McLean is beginning to reap the
rewards of a recent week's practice in the Spanish sunshine with Paul
Lawrie and his coach Neil Marr at the five'star resort of Hacienda del
Alamo.
The Peterhead player, who has a handicap of +2, won today´s
North-east Golfers´Alliance competition by three strokes with a
sparkling four-under-par round of 65 at Craibstone Golf Centre,
Aberdeen.
McLean birdied the first, fourth, fifth, 10th, 15th and 16th in halves
of 32 (three under par) and 33 (one under) and had bogeys at the 11th
and 14th.
Joint runners up on 68 were another bright young North-east prospect,
Aberdeen Grammar School pupil David Law (Hazlehead) and Murcar Links
player Anthony Bews.
The leading professional was Westhill´s George Bruce in fourth place on
69.
It was a typical Winter Alliance day. The start of play for the field
ofr 98 was delayed about 30min because of overnight frost. That was
followed by several hours of brlliant sunshine before the fog suddenly
descended and had the tail'end of the field struggling to find their
way back to the clubhouse.
