STOOPING TO CONQUER ... HOW THE SPIRIT OF
A TOURNAMENT CAN BE TWISTED

HUGH HUNTER WRITES:
I note your (Colin Farquharson) comments re the winning French club team (containing three players with +5, +3 and +2 handicaps) at the European Club Championship Final in Corfu and the parallels with the old Golf Foundation Scottish schools tournament.
Spot on. When my school won the Golf Foundation Scottish final in the early nineties, I went with the three boys to the international final at Sunningdale. We discovered the same Indian team came every year (all expenses paid) because it was the only school to play golf. The team contained Daniel Chopra (a winner on the USA Tour recently) and in conversation he said he was in danger of being thrown out of school because he had only attended two weeks in the last year. My team all went silent.
Yes ,these things are fine as long as the spirit of golf is followed, but some people will twist things.
