TAIN'S NEW PRO STUART MORRISON
MAKES HIS MARK WITH ALLIANCE
WIN OVER HOME COURSE

By ROBIN WILSON
Local professional, Stuart Morrison after his move from the MacDonald Spey Valley golf course in Aviemore at the beginning of October to become Tain's first full professional for some time marked his debut as a member of the North Golf Alliance with the winning scratch score score at his new charge.
A Scottish Golf Union recognised junior golf coach for the North, Morrison (35) was for many years first assistant to Andrew Skinner at Royal Dornoch.
He returned a two over par 72 to win by a shot from the local amateur club champion Munro Ferries.
Morrison's long game on his first competitive outing was sound. He had 16pars and just two bogies, but could not buy a birdie putt. His stats were 35 shots, but 37 putts. After eight opening par figures his bogey at the ninth was a result of three putts from the edge of the green and his second dropped shot came from his only fairway miss at the 12th hole in equal halves of 36.
Munro Ferries had a level par outward card of 35 but dropped back to back shots at the 12th and 13th and then on the final hole for an inward 38 to finish in second place.
Shooting a gross 75 for net 70 to win the Class 1 handicap section was local Steve Holmes who was out in 37, with a 7 at the seventh hole, and then an even stranger inward card of 38 that contained only two par figures. It was littered with bogeys and double bogeys, his doubles at the the 10th and 17th. Slightly compensating for these misdemeanours were birdies at the 11th and 12th holes.
The Brora duo of Ken Lorrimer and Tony Gill, for a second week, occupied the next two places, Lorimer second with net 71 off nine, and Gill a net 72 off four.
Recording his second first place of the year in the higher handicap section in only his third fixture was Tarbat's Stuart MacDonald who won with a net 71, off 15.
After a break this weekend for Remembrance Sunday, the fixtures resume at Royal Dornoch on Sunday, November 18.
