Happiness is a Buggy Ride for Ian Woosnam

By DENNIS SHAW

Ian Woosnam fired a one-under-par 70 here today to add to his first round 71 as fellow Welshman Simon Edwards retained the lead on eleven under par 131 in the Beko Classic 54-hole international pro-am …but the 2006 European Ryder Cup captain professed himself satisfied to be simply out on the course again playing the game ‘with a card in my hand’.
Although for the former US Masters champion and World No 1 it was like being back to his professional roots in playing pro-am golf with a range of handicap players, his pleasure was obvious, despite the fact that the 18 holes had to be negotiated with the help of a buggy ride.
In the slow process of recovery from the chronic fatigue syndrome that has affected his game for a considerable time he admitted to being able to use this tournament as a means of attempting to get back to full fitness in order to fulfil his ultimate aim of playing on the European Seniors Tour.
“At present I would be unable to walk the full course,” he added.
In another day of fine scoring on what, in the UK would be regarded as a perfect summer’s day, two English pros, Jon Bevan and John Kennedy, both matched Simon Edwards’ first round six-under-par 65 to join the leading bunch and set up the possibility of an exciting third and final round of jostling for a major share of the $US 85,000 prize fund.
Bevan’s excellent round took him into second d place only two behind Edwards
