ALISTAIR CATTO AND ARTHUR
PIERSE BOW OUT IN LAST 8
OF US SENIOR AMATEUR
Scot Alistair Catto and Irishman Arthur Pierse were knocked out of the United States Senior Amateur championship in the quarter-finals at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kansas.
Pierse, from Tipperary, won the British senior amateur title at Nairn just a few weeks ago. After beating the No 1 qualifier, Arthur lost by 4 and 3 to Stu Grendahl.
Catto was beaten at the 19th by Frank Ford III.
Catto, from South Hadley, Massachusetts - we don't know where he was born in Scotland, was playing in his first USGA Senior Amateur although he had been a regular in USGA events, such as the 1987, 1990 and 1995 US Amateurs tne the 1990 US Amateur Public Links.
Alistair won the 1991 Massachusetts Public Links, the 2003 Vermont Senior Open and the 2002 Cape Cod Senior Open.
He caddied for 1960 Open winner Ken Nagle in Champions (Seniors) Tour events … has seven holes-in-one, including one at the New England Amateur … has a career-low round of 67, shot to win the 1995 Western Massachusetts Amateur … a 1991 graduate of Amherst College … played on the squash team at Amherst … works in golf/racquet sales for Fran Johnsons Inc. … wife Bonnie (played in the 2007 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur this week) … birth date: Oct. 22, 1951.
