HARRINGTON NAMED EUROPEAN TOUR
GOLFER OF MONTH FOR JULY

Padraig Harrington, who enjoyed the finest moment of his career by claiming the 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie, has been named the European Tour Golfer of the Month for July.
Harrington, the first European-born player to win a Major Championship since Paul Lawrie at the same venue in 1999, earned the accolade at the end of a superb month on the European Tour which saw a number of truly outstanding achievements by Tour Members.
However Harrington’s play-off victory over Spain’s Sergio Garcia surpassed all those other outstanding accomplishments, which included Argentine Andres Romero’s spectacular entrance on the world stage, Colin Montgomerie’s return to winning ways and Frenchman Grégory Havret’s dramatic triumph over World Number Three, Phil Mickelson.
Harrington, winner of the May Golfer of the Month Award after his success in the Irish Open on home turf, arrived at Carnoustie having won the Irish PGA Championship for a fourth time. Despite a double bogey on the final hole, the Dubliner recovered his composure wonderfully to beat Garcia by a shot in the four hole play-off.
Romero’s rise from 114th to 29th in the World Rankings followed his third place finish in The Open followed by his first European Tour victory at the Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship of Europe in Hamburg.
Victory in the Open swept Harrington to the top of the European Tour Order of Merit and to a career-high sixth on the Official World Golf Rankings.
As he prepared to hit his first shot as Open Champion in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, Harrington commented: “I am delighted to receive this honour after a month which underlined the strength of The European Tour.
“The young guns like Andres Romero and Grégory Havret showed what they are capable of while Monty proved he is still a winner. A lot of Europeans will definitely be encouraged by my win because they know they can match my game and it will help them visualise the day when they, too, win a Major.”
