STONEHAVEN GC 36-HOLE OPEN WILL HAVE
£1,500 IN PRIZE VOUCHERS ON AUGUST 26
Stonehaven Golf Club is to hold a 36-hole men's open amateur tournament next month with prize vouchers totalling £1,500.
This will be one of the biggest prize pots in Scottish amateur golf with the winner pocketing a £500 voucher, the maxium permissible in amateur golf.
The scratch event, with a handicap limit of 10, will be held on Sunday, August 26, at the picturesque par-66 clifftop course, 15 miles south of Aberdeen.
Club captain David Callaghan said: "We are looking forward to a tremendous day's golf. Some of the top players in the North-east have already indicated that they will be entering and we expect leading players as well from all over the country.
"Our course record of 60, which was set in 2004, might well be under threat but that will depend on the weather.
"If the wind blows, however, it should be quite safe as our course, though short, is far from easy.
"It's also in terrific condition and I'm sure the top amateurs will enjoy playing it."
Stonehaven hit the headlines as a golf venue this week with the news that Jack Nicklaus's company is involved in the design of the proposed new course at the Ury Estate, just outside Stonehaven.
Mr Callaghan said: "It sounds an exciting development and we welcome anything that heightens interest in golf in this area.
"It is difficult to know at this stage what sort of impact it will have on our club but we've been here since 1888 and I suspect we'll still be here for many years. We also have our own plans for expansion and improvement and they won't be affected.
"If Jack Nicklaus himself ever comes to Ury, I hope he brings his clubs because we'll certainly invite him to play our course. I'd love to know what he would think about some of our holes, which have spectacular views of the North Sea, which he won't see, I'm afraid, from his new course."
