BIG NAMES AMONG THOSE WHO MISSED THE CUT

GREG PATERSON SURPRISE FIVE-SHOT LEADER
AT HALFWAY IN SUTHERLAND CHALICE

Greg Paterson (St Andrews) was the surprise halfway leader by the five shots in the Royal Bank of Scotland Sutherland Chalice, this weekend's Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit 72-hole open tournament at Dumfries and Galloway Golf Cup.
Only joint 40th in the SGU Order of Merit with 25pt - Wallace Booth (Comrie) leads with 475.50pt - Greg proved that statistics can be misleading. He shot a 68 and then a brilliant six-under-par 74 for a 36-hole tally of 132, eight under par and 12 under the combined CSS of 72 for each round.
Paterson's nearest rivals at the start of the third round will be former Scottish match-play champion Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie), who won that title at Southerness in Dumfries & Galloway country a couple of years ago, and Ian Thomson from Powfoot.
Campbell shot 71 and 66, Thomson 68 and 69.
Of the three joint first-round leaders on three-under-par 67, only Jonathan King (Glasgow) stayed in the limelight after a second circuit. Jonathan followed it up with a 71 to be in fourth place on 138, one ahead of youngsters Philip McLean (Peterhead) and James White (Lundin).
Peter Latimer (St Andrews News) and the man in form, Wallace Booth, winner of the Cameron Corbett Vase at Haggs Castle last weekend and the Tennant Cup at Glasgow Killermont a couple of weeks before that, sagged with 78 and 75 respectively.
There were some surprisingly high scores from international players such as Paul O'Hara (Colville Park) and Scott Henry (Cardross). O'Hara had 79 and 73 for 152, Henry 77 and 83 for 160.
The cut fell at six-over-par 146 (those with 147 and higher did not qualify for the final two rounds).
Non-qualifiers included some relatively big names, such as the new Scottish boys' match-play champion Paul Ferrier (Baberton) on 147, Zack Saltman (Craigielaw) on 147, Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey), winner of the East of Scotland Open, also on 147.
Of course, O'Hara and Henry missed the cut by a mile.
