JAMES BYRNE FIVE SHOTS CLEAR AT HALFWAY
STAGE OF SCOTTISH BOYS STROKE-PLAY

Hot favourite James Byrne will start the final 36 holes of the Scottish boys open amateur stroke-play championship with a five-stroke lead at Cardrona, Peebles tomorrow.
Looking and feeling supremely confident, Byrne posted a second-round 69 in windier conditions than on Tuesday for a halfway tally of eight-under-par 136.
Byrne, the 18-year-old full Scotland cap from Banchory, made up for a bogey at the first and a double bogey 5 at the short fifth with six birdies – at the third, sixth, seventh, eighth, 11th and 13th in halves of 35 (one under par) and 34 (two under par).
With Graham Davidson (Winterfield) and Chris Gaittens (Fortrose & Rosemarkie), his closest rivals overnight, dropping back slightly, Byrne opened up a five-shot advantage from Scotland boys’ international team-mate Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck).
Stewart matched the par of 72 for 141 after an opening 69.
Byrne – who must be the only teenage amateur golfer in Scotland with his own website – said: “I like leading from the front and I am playing steadily. I just have to keep my game on track now.
“It’s good to be in a competitive spirit right now, and I feel this is putting me in the right frame of mind for the Scottish Amateur championship next week at Prestwick as well.”

On August 12, Byrne departs for a four-year golf scholarship at Arizona State University. He added, “This event and the Scottish Amateur next week will put me in good stead for playing on the US collegiate circuit. The standard will be high and I am looking forward to being in that competitive and demanding environment and am hopeful it will bring my game on.”

Andrew McLachlan carded the best round of the day – a four under par-68 to be sharing third place on 142 with Andrew Wallace (Glenbervie) and the leading North challenger, Fraser Fotheringham (Nairn) who was not far behind McLachlan with a 69.
McLachlan is the 15 year old West of Scotland boys champion.
and 17th.
A total of 43 players with aggregates of seven over par 151 or better qualified for the final day's play.
