£1,250 JUST TO ENTER THE EURO TOUR SCHOOL
QUALIFYING PROCESS ... THEN THERE ARE
TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION COSTS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
It's the time of year when aspiring young amateurs and professionals turn their minds to the European Tour School with the dream of winning their way through the various stages to take their place on the lucrative European Tour next year.
It's not a cheap process by any means and as Hugh Hunter pointed out to me, the system seems to be geared to "protect" those already on the European Tour.
For a start it will cost you £1,250 just to enter the Qualifying School process.
One complication for international-class amateurs is that one of this year's qualifying events clashes with the men's home internationals at County Louth Golf Club in Ireland from September 19 to 21.
Then there's the cost of travelling to the various venues if you clear the hurdles along the way.
One good thing that has changed over the years is that an amateur no longer automatically become a professional when he plays in any Qualifying School competition - once upon a time it was sufficient for an amateur just to send off an entry to the Q School to be declared a pro.
Here are the competitions:

FIRST QUALIFYING STAGE

SECTION A (September 11 to 14)
Choice of venues:
Chart Hills GC
The Oxfordshire GC.
Fleesensee G&CC, Germany.

SECTION B (September 18 to 21)
Choice of venues:
St Anne's Old Links GC.
Golf de Moliets, France.
Circolo Golf Bogogno, Italy.

SECOND QUALIFYING STAGE

SECTION B (November 7 to 10)
Choice of Spanish venues:
Arcos Gardens, Jerez, Spain.
PGA Golf de Catallunya, Spain.
Golf Costa Ballena.
Sherry Golf Jerez.

FINAL QUALIFYING SCHOOL
November 15 to 20.
San Roque Old & New Courses,
Costa del Sol, Spain.

Hi Colin, The details of the 2007 Tour school make interesting reading, maybe worthy of a feature on your web site. ( Go to European Tour site, then qualifying school, then download an application form) Entry qualifications for the second and final stages are hugely elaborate, and clearly favour those already in the system. Anyone trying to get straight into the European Tour is going to have an increasingly difficult task to qualify. The entry fee is £1250. Think I mentioned that one section of stage one clashes with the Home Internationals Cheers Hugh
