DOUGHERTY IN GOOD NICK AT END OF FIRST
DAY IN US OPEN AT OAKMONT
Young Nick Dougherty from England put together the major round of his career so far to lead on two-under-par 68 at the end of the first day in the US Open championship at Oakmont Golf Club.
He is one shot ahead of Angel Cabrera (Argentina) with Jose-Maria Olazabal (Spain) and Bubby Watson, the leading American, joint third on 70.
Martin Laird and Colin Montgomerie, the two Scots professionals in the field, both had 76s.
Richie Ramsay, playing with Tiger Woods and defending champion Geoff Ogilvy as holder of the US amateur championship, had a 78.
