Scottish Golf Union Press Release

D M HALL MID AMATEUR TITLE WIDE OPEN AT DUDDINGSTON

The 14th staging of the DM Hall Mid Amateur Championship gets underway this weekend, at Duddingston Golf Club (16-18 June). Boasting the strongest field of players with the handicap ballot set at an all time record low of 2.7, the popularity of the event continues to flourish, attracting one of the largest numbers of entrants since the event began.

The quest for the 2007 title looks wide open this year, with the notable omission of reigning champion Allyn Dick who has enjoyed an impressive record in the championship. Finishing as runner up in 2004 to Roger Roper, Dick went on to claim the title in 2005 and 2006, but will not defend his title this year to bag the much coveted hat-trick. Leaving it to last year’s runner-up Terry Mathieson from Murcar Links to try his luck and hopefully go one better, jostling alongside former champion Roger Roper who will harbour hopes of clinching the double.

Past winners of the championship include former British Amateur Champion Craig Watson and Scottish internationalist Glenn Campbell, as well as current Scotland team captain George Crawford, highlighting the calibre of the contenders for the title and the prestige of the event.

The Championship, launched to provide working golfers aged 25 and over the opportunity to compete for a national title, has been supported for a number of years by sponsors DM Hall.

Emma Strachan, Marketing Manager for DM Hall said, “We are delighted to be sponsoring this event which supports golf at grass roots level. We have a long standing partnership with the Scottish Golf Union, which is a reflection of our interest and commitment to the game and nurturing talent and local events.

Duddingston will provide an excellent venue for the Mid Amateur Championship, which looks set to be one of the most hotly contested with such a quality representation in the field. “

Duddingston, nestling in the heart of Edinburgh is one of the best inland courses in Scotland and will provide a great test of golf for the field of 78, including 8 golfers hoping to make home advantage count.

The Championship begins on Saturday with 36 holes of stroke play, with the leading 16 players qualifying for the knock-out stages. The final takes place on Monday afternoon.
