NEWS FROM BRITISH MEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

DAVID HORSEY'S 64 TARGET STANDS
UP ALL DAY AT ROYAL LYTHAM

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE

David Horsey (Styal), one of the first players out on the course just after seven o'clock this morning, set a target of 64 at Royal Lytham & St Annes that was unmatched throughout the day as 36-hole stroke play qualifying for the Amateur Championship got under way.
At St Annes Old Links David Corsby (Fleetwood) and Craig Evans (West Monmouthshire) led the way with 65s
Late in the day Kevin McAlpine (Alyth), the new Scottish stroke-play champion, missed a 20-foot putt at the last that would have equalled Horsey, but four birdies in a row from the 13th consolidated a fine round of 65. Kevin hit a nine-iron to two feet at the 13th and had just pulled on his waterpoofs at the next hole as a storm rolled in over the course when he chipped in from 15 feet.
"My short game is a lot better than it used to be and I'm learning to miss in the right places," he said.
Evans had played 16 holes at St Annes with seven birdies and no dropped shots when he pulled an eight-iron approach into a bunker at the 17th green that cost him a shot. "That was hard to take," he said after making a birdie at the last to match the 65 set earlier in the day by Corsby.
There was little for former champions to celebrate. Gary Wolstenholme, the winner in 1991 and 2003, said: "I couldn't buy a putt," after a round of 73 at Royal Lytham.
Stuart Wilson, who succeeded him as champion in 2004, had a disastrous 80 on the same course. "I three-putted the first and it just got worse from there. I holed everything on the practice putting green, then it all went wrong," he said.
With only the leading 64 players and ties going into the match-play stages of the championship there will be fierce competition during Tuesday's second round. After the first 18 holes there are 63 players on 69 or better and 93 on 70 or better.

Royal Lytham has a par of 71 and St Annes 72.
