ENGLISH BOYS UNDER-16 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
AT SOUTHPORT & AINSDALE, JULY 4 to 6

England will field two strong teams in defence of the Nations Cup when the English Boys Under 16 open championship for the McGregor Trophy is played at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club on 4th - 6th July.
One three-man team will consist of Tom Lewis (Mid Herts), Chris Lloyd (The Kendleshire) and Adam Myers (Northants County). The other will comprise Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath), Tom Berry (Wentworth) and Jack Brooks (Pleasington).
All six are members of the England under 16 training squad and some have been capped at under 16 level.
This year’s Nations Cup contest will involve 16 three-man teams. England, Scotland, Wales, the Netherlands and Spain are fielding two teams each and there will be one each from Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, and Portugal.
The Nations Cup is contested over the first 36 holes of the McGregor Trophy and will be decided by the aggregate of the best two from three scores each round. In the event of a tie the Cup will be shared.
In the McGregor Trophy itself, Oscar Sharpe will not be defending the title he won at Worthing a year ago as he will be away with the rest of the England team at the European boys' team championships in Denmark. The same applies with Eddie Pepperell, who Sharpe beat by a stroke last year. That leaves Myers as the only former champion competing but the quest for the title is certain to be keen with the rest of the under 16 squad in the field, while the overseas challenge is likely to be strong. A
mong the past winners of the under 16 title are Steve Webster, Graeme Storm and Justin Rose, along with Jim Payne, now the professional at Southport & Ainsdale, who will take a keen interest in proceedings.
More recent champions have been internationals James Heath, Michael Skelton, Paul Waring, Matthew Baldwin and Oliver Fisher The title has also been won by non-British players on three occasions, by Eduardo Molinari in 1996, by his fellow Italian Roberto Paolillo in 1997 and by Wouter de Vries from the Netherlands in 2003.
A total of 200 entries were received for 132 places. All but one player with handicaps of four were balloted out, while 37 four-handicappers are on the reserve list.
