McNICOLL, SALTMAN AND KING BEAT
BRABAZON TROPHY HALFWAY CUT
BUT THEY ARE SOME WAY BEHIND

Carnoustie's Keir McNicoll, Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw) and Glasgow's Jonathan King were the only Scots to survive the halfway cut on 150 or better in the English amateur stroke-play championship for the Brabazon Trophy at the Marriott Forest of Arden.
Englishman David Horsey leads by one shot on four-under-par 140 after a pair of 70s.
He is only one stroke ahead of Irish international Richard Kilpatrick. The main Irish hope had expected to be young Rory McIlroy from Belfast. But he failed to beat the cut with a 36-hole total of 153.
Despite another difficult day with a strong wind and frequent heavy showers, Horsey, a 22 year old from Cheshire, felt conditions were marginally easier than on Friday.
“When I teed off I was looking for an even better score, possibly a 68, and I was close to it,” he said. “But I lipped out for eagle at 17 and dropped a shot at the last after finding sand.
“If you are playing well, even in these conditions, there is no reason why you can’t get birdies. I’m happy where I am. I don’t mind being a front-runner, it’s better than being somewhere else.”
Kilpatrick was in the last match out and benefited from easier conditions as the wind dropped and his 68 included five birdies.
In joint third spot on 142 are Horsey’s England team-mate Jamie Moul, who added a 70 to his opening 72, and Sam Hutsby, last year’s England boy captain, with a second 71.
“I felt it was a little easier because some tees had been moved forward,” said Moul, “I also gave myself more opportunities although I didn’t putt as well today.”
However, he did run in three birdies, one at the treacherous 476-yard ninth which has proved so dangerous to many. “I picked up some shots on the field there, didn’t I?” he quipped.
Hutsby also birdied the ninth and picked up another shot at the long 12th in his third successive 71 including the qualifying round.
“Shooting 71 is getting a bit boring,“ he joked. “But I’m happy with that although I got a bit sloppy on the back nine. It’s going to be a confidence boost for me what ever happens tomorrow.”
But the round of the day if not the week belonged to James Freeman, who went round in an amazing 67 with an eagle and five birdies for 143.
The eagle came at the 516-yard 17th where he fired a five-wood 229 yards to 15 feet and holed for three. But he built his score with a front nine of 33 with four birdies.
“I just played a shot at a time and swung freely,” he said. “I kept giving myself chances and took them while I also holed some good putts.”
Freeman, now playing out of Worksop, finished runner-up in this year’s Sunningdale Foursomes alongside Robert Steele and confirmed he’d had a decent start to the season but not a great one.
He shares fifth place with Rhys Enoch, the Welsh international from Cornwall, and Frenchman Cedric Scotto, who would have been just a shot off the pace but he lost a ball off the 18th tee and holed a good 12-footer for a double-bogey five and 71.
Until Horsey and Freeman took a hand the leaderboard took on a distinct Gaelic look as three Frenchmen headed the field with Adrien Bernadet and Kenny Le Sager on 145 with Romain Bechu one shot behind.
Bechu was later joined by England boy cap Andrew Johnston, whose carded a 72 despite a double-bogey six at the first hole.
“It wasn’t good to start with a double bogey when I three-putted after being in a bunker but I played pretty steady and managed four birdies,” he remarked.
“Despite the weather I enjoyed it. You’ve just got to battle and it’s a good test of golf,” admitted the 18 year old from Middlesex.
The cut came at six over par 150 with 48 players surviving for the final two rounds.
Scotland’s Lloyd Saltman and England cap Stephen Lewton made it on the limit but among those who didn’t were Irish teenager Rory McIlroy on 153.
