LESLEY FROM GOLSPIE IS PGA’S
FEMALE ASSISTANT
PROFESSIONAL OF YEAR
Golspie-born Lesley Mackay, 29, collected one of the star awards at today’s Professional Golfers’ Association graduation ceremony at The Belfry headquarters in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.
Lesley, a former Scotland amateur international player, shrugged off a career-threatening wrist injury to come out of the PGA’s three-year foundation degree course as the Female Assistant Professional of the Year, sponsored by the Ladies European Tour.
Lesley, who started her pro career under the wing of Karyn Dallas at Kirriemuir Golf Club, is now based at Glasgow’s World of Golf.
She received a £1,000 cheque and became the first recipient of the Beverly Lewis Trophy, named in honour of the PGA’s first female captain.
Acushnet Europe managing director Gary Miller said: “We are constantly impressed by the quality of young men and women coming through the ranks of the PGA training programme. As we strive to grow and develop the game of golf and make it more accessible, it is reassuring to see that the high standard of PGA graduates, reflected in another outstanding crop of Titleist assistants of the year, is being maintained. The future of golf is in good shape, judging by these young professionals.”
Michael Langford from Lincolnshire’s Kenwick Park Golf Club collected the prestigious Whitecombe Cox Trophy and a cheque for £3,500 as the Titleist Assistant of the year.
