JUSTIN ROSE TARGETS BMW PGA
CHAMPIONSHIP AT WENTWORTH
Justin Rose has put the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey, from May 24-27, on his 2007 schedule.
Rose, winner of three tournaments on the European Tour International Schedule including this season’s MasterCard Masters in Australia, joins an elite field which includes English compatriot David Howell, the defending champion, and seven of the current top 15 players in the world – Paul Casey, Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh and Henrik Stenson.
Rose, who came within a whisker of winning the Masters at Augusta National last month, said: “I’m returning to Britain to receive treatment for a back condition and I called George O’Grady, the Tour’s Chief Executive, to let him know that I planned to enter the BMW PGA Championship.
“I am feeling very positive that my back injury will continue to improve at the same rate so that I am able to play. I was delighted to win again on the European Tour this season and like everyone, nothing would give me greater pleasure than to win the BMW PGA Championship as all the players know that this is our flagship event.
“It will be good to play the West Course again at Wentworth and I’ve been told about the changes made by Ernie Els so I know it will be a challenging examination especially with such a great field of players lined up.
“I’ve been climbing the World Rankings this season and winning the BMW PGA Championship would lift me close to the top 10, which is obviously a target with the US Open and Open Championship also on the agenda in the next two months or so.”
Rose enjoyed a superb amateur career, culminating in his tied fourth place finish in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in 1998 just a few days before turning professional, aged just 17. He won four times worldwide in 2002, including the Dunhill Championship and the British Masters on The European Tour International Schedule.
He went on to play in the winning Great Britain and Ireland side in the 2003 Seve Trophy, during the same season that he finished in a share of fifth place in the US Open Championship. In 2004, he came close to winning the PGA Championship when he led at the halfway stage after rounds of 67 and 66, before Scotland’s Scott Drummond moved through to win with a closing 64.
The 2007 BMW PGA Championship will boast one of the strongest international fields on The European Tour Schedule, with many of the world’s best players in action. All four days will be broadcast live on BBC Television.
