HENDERSON HORROR ROUND IN RAIN-DELAYED CHALLENGE TOUR EVENT
IN MADRID

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE:

Edoardo Molinari rediscovered his touch on the greens to putt himself onto the verge of European Challenge Tour history at the Open Mahou de Madrid.
The Italian, who has won twice on the 2007 Challenge Tour Schedule already this season to sit at the top of the Rankings, can secure instant promotion to the European Tour by winning at the Casino Club de Golf Retamares his weekend.
After play was wiped out due to flooding at the golf course on Thursday, Molinari got his first round underway this afternoon and shot to the top of the leaderboard with an opening six under par 65, joining Frenchman Nicolas Billot in a tie for first place.
“I played very well today,” said Molinari. “I hit the ball well and finally holed putts, which was a relief because I didn’t hole anything last week in Belgium.
“Today I made some important ones from around four and five metres. If I keep playing like this I know that another victory will come. It’s always difficult to win, but I will have a chance if I can putt like I did today.”
Billot put together seven birdies and just a single dropped shot to join Molinari in the lead, one stroke ahead of Spanish duo Vicente Apron and Carlos Balmaseda, Sweden’s Klas Eriksson and Argentina’s Julio Zapata.
Like Molinari, Billot attributed the success of his first round to his putting ability.
He said: I holed good putts today – everything from between two and three metres seemed to go in, which always makes a different to your round.”
The second round of the Open Mahou de Madrid will be tee off on Saturday morning, when a decision will be made on whether or not the tournament will have to be reduced to 54 holes in order to finish on Sunday afternoon.
Scott Henderson, pictured above, had a horrendous round of 81 in the rain-delayed first round.
The Aberdonian had a triple bogey 7 at the sixth, a double-bogey 5 at the ninth and a double-bogey 6 at the 18th in halves of 41 and 40. He is lying joint 148th in a field of 155 players.
But there was better news of Carnoustie's Eric Ramsay who had a 68 and Jamie McLeary a competent round of 70, one shot better than Peter Whiteford.
For some reason, it was only Henderson among the Scots who found the course very difficult.
