PAUL FERRIER v WILLIAM BREMNER
FOR SCOTTISH BOYS' TITLE
IN 36-hole DUNBAR FINALE
Paul Ferrier (Baberton) versus William Bremner (Edzell) - it's a 36-hole Saturday final of the Scottish boys' match-play championship at Dunbar that few would have predicted at the start of the week.
Both boys were unseeded. In fact, the only surviving seed, No 2 ranked Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) lost in the second semi-final to Bremner who won by one hole.
In the other semi-final Ferrier beat Jeff O'Malley (Newbattle) by 5 and 4.
Ferrier was roughly two over par for the holes played. He won the first, third, fourth and fifth to take a commanding four-hole lead. O'Malley did get him back to three holes of an advantage on two occasions but that was as far as he got in trying to turn the tide.
Bremner put himself in the mood to reach his first national final by birdieing the first two holes to go two holes up. He was never headed by Stewart who went three down to a birdie 4 by Bremner at the ninth.
Stewart won by the 14th with par but Bremner immediately retaliated with a birdie 3 at the 15th to restore his three-hole advantage.
Bremner bogeyed both the 16th and 17th to see his lead shrink to only one hole on the 18th tee but he was able to halve the last in pars for victory. The Edzell lad was roughly two over par at the finish.
SEMI-FINALS
Paul Ferrier (Baberton) bt Jeff O'Malley (Newbattle) 5 and 4.
William Bremner (Edzell) bt Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) 1 hole.
