BRITISH BOYS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
FINDLAY SCRAPES THROUGH BUT KIRTON
AND BYRNE MAKE EARLY EXIT AT BALGOWNIE
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Jordan Findlay scraped through at the 21st hole but otherwise it was a black morning for Scotland’s leading hopes in the British boys’ amateur championship at cold and windy Balgownie.
James Byrne (Banchory) and Lewis Kirton (Newmachar), the most successful players of all four countries in last week’s boys’ home internationals at Lossiemouth, fell at the first hurdle.
Byrne went down by 2 and 1 to Matt Kippen (Enmore Park).
“I putted terribly – and Matt putted like a dream. That was the difference although I feel awfully tired after last week’s internationals,” said James.
Kirton went down by 5 and 3 to Jack Hiscock (Marlborough), slipping two down after four holes and never really recovering from that.
Findlay was two up with four to play against Thomas Speyer (West Herts) and then lost the 15th to a birdie and the 18th where he took shots to get out from a plugged lie in the sand.
Jordan holed a good seven-footer for a half at the 20th and then got up and down from 25yd through the green at the short 21st to win the hole and the tie with a par 3.
Cameron Gray (West Kilbride), another member of Scotland’s victorious team, went down by two holes to Tom Hayes (West Byfleet) but Shaun McAllister (Craigielaw) advanced with a 2 and 1 win over Miro Veijalainen (Finland).
