Phil Dempsey knocks out Graham Bell

in senior quarter-finals at Alyth

Conditions at Alyth changed from being calm in the morning to a stiff breeze in the afternoon, making the course much more difficult for the quarter-finals of the Scottish senior men's match-play championship.
The surprise name to make the semi-finals is Phil Dempsey (Tulliallan) who defeated Scottish senior stroke play champion Graham Bell (Downfield) by 4 and 3.
In the semi-finals Dempsey will play John Fraser (Royal Burgess) who beat David Logie (Craigie Hill) 4 and 3.
The other semi-final sees top seed Nick Robson (Meldrum House), who squeezed past Albert Smith (Turriff) on the 18th green in the morning's second round,  play Robert Smith (Nairn).
Robson beat Muir Townsley (Dumfries and Co) 4 and 2 in the afternoon quarter-finals, while Smith won by one hole against Keith Bruce (Edzell).
Robert Smith looked to be in control of his match when he went three up after 11, but Bruce birdied the 12th and won the 17th where his opponent lost a ball. Smith hit his approach shot at the last to 3 feet, and when Bruce failed with his birdie attempt from 15 feet, it was all over.
The semi-finals and final will be played tomorrow (Friday) along with the final of the Super Seniors event in which Andrew Laird (Deeside) will play Peter Kinloch (Cardross).
