Seven Scots riding high on
road to Stage 2 in Spain

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Maybe not quite the "Magnificent Seven" but that's the number of Scots who are riding high on their way to next month's Stage 2 in Spain from the European Tour First Qualifying Stage Section B at The Oxfordshire Golf Club.
Three of them are still holding on to their amateur status - Scottish match-play champion Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), Scottish stroke-play champion Wallace Booth (Comrie) and international team-mate Gavin Dear (Murrayshall).
The four Scottish pros who have kept alive their hopes of making it to the European Tour are Glasgow's Scott Jamieson, a Scottish youths champion when he was an amateur, South Wales-based Paul Docherty, who was the 2003 Scottish boys' match-play champion, and Chris Doak (unattached), the Tartan Tour's No 1 money-winner this season and current Northern Open champion.
A total of 36 players qualified with 72-hole totals of five-under-par 283.
They did not include Carnoustie's amateur international Keir McNicoll, winner of the St Andrews Trophy and the Leven Gold Medal this past summer, and journeymen pros Scott Henderson (Kings Links), Edward Thomson and Jason McCreadie (Buchanan Castle).
Had Macaulay been a professional he would have earned £1,000 in hard cash for being runner-up on 14-under-par 274 behind joint "winners" Chris Wood (Long Ashton), who turned pro soon after he was leading amateur in the Open in July, and Walker Cup amateur Jonathan Caldwell from Clandeboye, Ireland, both on 271.
Macaulay decided not to play in the Newlands Trophy at Lanark, the last event of the SGU Order of Merit, and it was a wise move. He looked fresh and in top form with scores of 69, 64, 70 and 71.
Wood's scores were 65, 70, 66 and 70 while Caldwell's were 71, 69, 66 and 65.
Scott Jamieson, after four years on the American college circuit has been gaining pro experienced on the Hooters Tour in the States and the odd appearance on the Challenge Tour. He timed his return to some of his best form perfectly, finishing joint fourth on 13-under-par 275 with scores of 68, 67, 68 and 71 to earn £733.
Gavin Dear came a very creditable seventh in such a strong field with scores of 70, 71, 68 and 67 for 12-under 276.
Paul Doherty finished joint 12th with 71, 69, 69 and 70 for nine-under 279.
Chris Doak came joint 17th with 70, 70, 67 and 73 for eight-under 280.
Craigielaw man Elliot Saltman, a winner on the PGA EuroPro Tour, peaked a little bit early at The Oxfordshire with a couple of 67s in the first two rounds before he slipped down the field with a pair of 74s for six-under-282. But he made it through in joint 23rd place alongside Wallace Booth who knew he had to shoot no higher than 70 if he were to survive.
And the Comrie man responded to the pressure in admirable style with a three-under--par 69, to add on to earlier scores of 68, 71 and 74, to make it with a stroke to spare on six-under 282.
Keir McNicoll and Edward Thomson made a brave bit to pull themselves up over the barrier by shooting five-under 67 and 69 respectively but they finished on 285, two shots too many to advance to Stage 2.
Aberdeen's Scott Henderson, European Tour Rookie of the Year in 1997, has failed at an early stage in his bid to regain top competition status.

In the final analysis it was a second round 76 that killed the Aberdonian's dreams. His other scores were 68, 69 and 72 as he finished opn three-under-par 285 and in a tie for 41st place.
