Report from PGA EuroPro Tour in Ireland
Crue in control at Faithlegg as
triple bogey 8 KOs Kelly
Crue Elliott leads the way after the first round of the Faithlegg Ivobank PGA EuroPro Tour Championship at Faithlegg in Waterford, posting four under for the day.
A couple of bogeys and birdies on the front nine sent Elliott (Burnham Beeches) down the home stretch level – but he stepped up a gear to post birdies at 10 and 11, with two more back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to shoot four-under-par68.
Nineteen year-old South African Darryn Lloyd is one shot behind on 69 after also picking up four birdies down the back nine.
Tom Haylock looked set to be three under for the round but bogeyed 17 to drop to two under 70, where he is alongside Simon Robinson (The Wynyard Club).
Robinson eagled the second hole after starting on the 10th and went on to birdie the seventh after going down the back nine one over. Completing the foursome on 70 are Elliot Saltman (Aegon) and Lloyd Kennedy (Chelmsford GC).
There are eight players on 71, including Glasgow's former Scottish amateur champion Barry Hume, Tyrone Ferreira, another South African who won the Zambian Open on the Sunshine Tour in March, Brian McElhinney (Team Ireland), the Irishman who won at The Shire London and fellow countryman Padraig Dooley (Cork GC).
Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool) was three under going into the final two holes, but bogeyed 17 and double bogeyed the last to spoil his earlier work where he’d picked up five birdies – he’s level 72 for the first round along with a cluster of others who will hope the stiff breeze will disappear tomorrow.
Lorne Kelly (Pro Dream USA) also upset some early form with a triple bogey 8 at the par-5 13th after four birdies on the front nine. Kelly starts the second round on two over 74 when he was looking to break 70.
