DOUBLE BOGEYS KILL JAMES BYRNE
HOPES IN THUNDERBIRD INVITATIONAL
James Byrne's American college, Arizona State, won the team event in the Thunderbird Invitational golf tournament over the Karsten course, Tempe, Arizona - but the Banchory student finished a disappointing joint 40th in a field of 87 with rounds of 69, 77 and 75 for an eight-over-par total of 221.
After having a counting score for the team in the first round, James made no contribution thereafter and his total was the highest of the five Arizona State players.
Byrne, a full Scotland cap in 2007, had 14 birdies but six double bogeys over the three rounds - all of them a different holes.
Byrne is the holder of the Scottish boys' open stroke-play title and another past winner of that title, Haddington's Mark Lamb, a student at Arizona University, finished joint 46th with scores of 73, 76 and 73 for 222.
It was a Norwegian 1-2 at the top of the leaderboard with Espen Kofstadt (Denver) from Oslo winning with rounds of 70, 72 and 68 for three-under-par 210. He won by a shot from compatriot Knut Borsheim (Arizona State) from Bergen with scores of 73, 68 and 70 for 211.
