Peter Whiteford top Scots qualifier in Jakarta
IN INDONESIAN OPEN
Unheralded Felipe Aguilar of Chile fired the day's best score of eight-under par 62 for a 13-under par 127 total to take the second lead at the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open today.
The Chilean, who started on the back nine, took advantage of the clear
morning conditions at the Cengkareng Golf Club to reach the turn on 30
before firing a total of eight birdies in a blemish free round to close
on 62.
Thailand's Prom Meesawat, who finished seventh on the Asian Tour's
Order of Merit and registered six top-10s last season, produced five
straight birdies in his opening front nine before closing with a total
of nine birdies to share second place with South Africa's James Kamte
on matching 129s.
Thailand's other in-form star, Prayad Marksaeng continued his early
good form to the season by matching his opening round score of 65 to
share fourth place with Austria's Martin Wiegele.
Asian Tour's leading stalwarts Jeev Milkha Singh posted a 66 to take
sixth place while China's Liang Wen-chong recorded a 67 to end in
seventh place at the US$1.2 million co-sanctioned event between the
Asian Tour and European Tour.
Aguilar, who believes that his first win on the European Tour is not
going to be far from sight will now be hoping to further improve on his
putting strokes so that he can race further ahead in the weekend rounds.
"I don't want to sound egotistical but if I had putted really well
today, I could have had 13 or 14 under for the round. I felt like I was
throwing darts at the pins," said Aguilar
"I probably missed one or two fairways, but it was a good round. I do
feel ready. I have the will and I have the game. I just need to wait
for the right week and hopefully it's this one," added Aguilar.
Prom, who started the day in 10th place, impressed the crowd at the
Cengkareng Golf Club with his excellent drives and putting to line
himself up for a shot at winning his first Asian Tour title since 2006.
"My putting has been very good today. Most of my second shots fell very
close to the pins and I only have to tap them in for birdies," said the
young Thai star whose last victory on the Asian Tour was at the 2006 SK
Telecom Open.
"I'm feeling very confident about my game now. I've been hitting my
drivers well and making the best out of those second shots for birdies.
I feel good" added the burly Thai star.
Despite a lone bogey on the closing par-four hole, where a huge crowd
have been surrounding the green, Singh was still satisfied with his
overall performance so far.
"I just hit it to the right of the flag and there was a slope there. I
tried to lag that putt but left it shot. However, that's alright. It's
the only bogey against the five birdies that I've made today," said
Singh.
"It is definitely exciting to play coming into the weekend rounds. And
that's exactly why we play- to get into these positions and try to do
something come Sunday."
Former Ryder Cup Scot Andrew Coltart, who lost his Euro Tour card at the end of last season, continues to make the halfway cuts. Could this be the event where he maintains or even improves on his form of the first two days to record a high finish rather than the pattern of falling back down the field at the weekend.
Coltart shot 67 and 72 for 139 over the par'70 lay-out to beat the cut by one shot.
Rookie Craig Lee shot level par 140 and did not make it, alongwith Steven OHara and David Drysdale.
Peter Whiteford, another rookie on the European Tour, is the leading Scot on 135.
