Scot McLean blows two shot lead on final round
KAMTE THREE LATE BIRDIES GIVE HIM
VICTORY IN DIMENSION DATE
PRO-AM AT GARY PLAYER C C
FROM THE SUNSHINE TOUR WEBSITE:
As a professional golfer, James Kamte relies heavily on numbers. But it was the particular numbers 22:5 that carried him to victory in the Dimension Data Pro-Am at the Gary Player Country Club course today.
It was a part of that verse in Psalms, which reads "They put their trust in God and were never disappointed", that the deeply religious Kamte scribbled on a piece of paper at the start of the tournament and glanced at every now and then on the course to calm himself.
And he reflected on it often during a final round in which several players jostled for the lead, but which ended with Kamte taking victory on 11 under par 277 with a round of 70 which he signed off with three birdies in his final five holes.
James Kingston finished second on eight under with a closing 74, while Peter Karmis took third on seven under with a final round of 71.
The final round dawned with Scot Alan McLean leading by two strokes. But in a stretch of five holes on the front nine he carded three bogeys, one triple bogey and a single birdie to effectively end his challenge.
Thomas Aiken made his own charge on the final day, climbing from four under at the start into a share of the lead on nine under midway through the back nine. But his challenge was also derailed by a quadruple bogey 8 on the 17th. He birdied the last for a 70 and a finish of six under par.
With the Gary Player Country Club course a fearsome challenge on the final day, Kamte's four bogeys and three birdies in 13 holes were enough to give him a share of the lead with Kingston, who carded four bogeys and two birdies in 12 holes, on eight under par.
Kamte then took the sole lead with his birdie at the 14th, and added further birdies at 15 and 17 to clinch the title.
Kingston parred his way to the last where he sealed a birdie to finish second on his own.
This is Kamte's second victory as a professional following his breakthrough win in the 2007 Seekers Travel Pro-Am.
It's also the perfect preparation for the young player ahead of his first full season on the European Tour after he gained his tour card at last year's Qualifying School.
Kamte's next assignment will be this week's Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour. He was granted a sponsor's invitation to play in the event, and will face an extremely strong field.
