PETER WHITEFORD WINS TAMSEL TOUR
EVENT BY FIVE STROKES

Fifer Peter Whiteford (Wellsgreen) was an impressive five-shot winner of the £2,000 first prize in the Tamsel Tour 36-hole event at Withington Golf Club, Didsbury near Manchester today.
Whiteford had rounds of 66 and 67 for an 11-under-par total of 133.
Whiteford, whose older brother Stewart won the 1996 Scottish boys' match-play title, has made some appearances on the European Challenge Tour this year.
Runner-up to Peter was PGA Cup player Paul Wesselingh who was bidding to become the first man to win three Tamsel Tour events in a row. Paul had 68 and 70 for 138.
The only other entries from Scotland, apart from Whiteford, in the field of 80 were Danny Kirk and David Pyott, both entered from St Andrews.

WEDNESDAY WOE FOR SCOTS ON PGA
EUROPRO TOUR EVENT AT NORWICH

Irish eyes might have been smiling - Colm Moriarty shot a 70 to extend his overnight lead to five strokes - but Wednesday was a day of woe for the majority of the Scots in the field for this week's PGA EuroPro Tour event, the Wensum Valley International Open at Wensum Valley Golf Club, Norwich.
Moriarty is the only competitor that has not struggled during the opening two rounds as many players have found the windy conditions and hard, dry course tough to handle.
.Only three Scots had scores of 149 or better to qualify for the third and final round.
They were Jay Taylor in joint sixth place on 145 with scores of 73 and 72 despite a double bogey 6 at the ninth, Elliot Saltman from Dalkeith in a share of 11th place on 146 with a pair of 73s, in which he had a great four under par run from the 13th, having been five over par for the round after nine holes.
Stephen Lamb from Broomieknowe is the only other Scot still playing after scores of 72 and 76 for 148.
Paul Doherty (151), Graham Gordon (152), Jack Doherty (154), Paul Cormack (154), Alasdair Hay (156), Christopher Farr (159), Graeme Brown (159) and Neil Mitchell (160) all failed to make it.
First prize is £10,000 but it looks a question of "Who's going to be second?" to Irishman Moriarity.

OLDCORN TURNS CLOCK BACK WITH A 64 IN FIRST ROUND
AT CRAIGIELAW

Andrew Oldcorn, pictured right, almost spreadeagled the field with a splendid round of seven-under-par 64 at Craigielaw in the first round of the 36-hole Callaway Challenge in bright and latterly breezy conditions today.
Winner of the PGA championship at Wentworth in 2001, Oldcorn finished 198th in the European Tour Order of Merit last year when he missed 16 cuts in 24 competitions.
But at Craigielaw, it was the “old” Oldcorn with a bag of eight birdies – at the second, fourth, fifth, ninth, 11th, 15th, 16th and 18th in halves of 31 (four under par) and 33 (three under). The Kings Acre man’s only bogey came at the 10th.
Had it not been for a very good 66 by young Steven Clydesdale (Brucefields), Oldcorn would have left the field trailing by four shots in the £13,000 event.
But Clydesdale was able to hang on to Andrew’s bootlaces with a 66, which also included an outward half of 31 but “only” six birdies, at the fourth, sixth, seventh, ninth, 10th and 13th. Steven was only one behind Oldcorn until he bogeyed the 16th.

CHAMPIONSHIP

Kemnay Golf Club professional Ronnie McDonald and Robert Webster, now retired, headed the Scottish challenge in the first round of the 54-hole PGA Senior Club professional championship at Northamptonshire County Golf Club today.
Both hit the five-over-par 75 mark to be sharing 10th place, six shots behind leader Donald Stirling.
Ronnie, pictured right, had no birdies on his scorecard which had a double-bogey 6 at the fifth and single shots dropped at the 11th, 12th and 18th.
Robert did have a birdie, at the eighth, and was only one over par with six holes to play but tired a little and bogeyed the 13th, 14th, 16th and 18th.
Former British boys champion Garry Harvey from Perth had a 76 which included a little bit of everything. He finished in grand style with an eagle 3 at the 507yd 18th and had a birdie 2 at the short 15th. But he also had a triple bogey 7 at the 17th, and a pair of double bogey 6s at the first and 11th
