THEY CAN'T HOLD THAT TIGER
IN TARGET WORLD
CHALLENGE - HE LEADS
BY SIX AFTER ROUND 3
Tiger Woods leads his own tournament - the Target World Challenge - by a commanding six strokes with one round to go in California.
Woods shot a 5-under-par 67 in Saturday's third round to stand at an impressive 18-under-par 198 but he missed setting a new tournament record for the 54-hole mark by one stroke.
Jim Furyk is his closest "challenger" with Masters champion Zach Johnson in third place, seven shots behind Tiger.
Woods began the third round with a four-stroke advantage over Furyk at Sherwood Country Club and started strongly with birdies on his first two holes, building his lead to five shots.
Woods made a bogey on the fourth hole and Furyk made birdie to cut the lead to three. Woods built it back to four shots with another birdie on No. 6.
A missed par putt from four feet on the par-3 eighth hole dropped the lead to three and Woods settled for a 2-under 34 at the turn.
Furyk shot a bogey-free 33, and avoided a mistake on the ninth hole. Furyk, who finished with a 3-under 69, hooked his tee shot and then was forced to lay up. His wedge shot nearly went in the cup and he tapped in for a par.
Woods made birdies on 10, 11 and added another on the final hole to build the lead to six.
Colin Montgomerie broke 70 for the second day in a row to get back to level par for 54 holes following his disastrous opening round of eight-over 80. Colin shot a 69 which includfed an eagle 3 at the 11th and birdies at the third, sixth, 10th, 15th and 16th. He dropped shots at the fifth, ninth, 13th and 17th.
