ASTOUNDING ALVA!
By HUGH HUNTER
It was the evening for the great and good from the Wee County. Gathered in Alloa Town Hall were the elite from the local world of Art, Enterprise and Sport, together with the top County Administrators and all presided over by Provost Derek Stewart. In addition, the “Citizen of the Year” was identified from 10 finalists.
Clackmannan County Golf Union had submitted three high quality nominations for the Sporting Awards. Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) and Scott Borrowman (Dollar) with their outstanding achievements were nominated for the Senior Sports Personality of the Year, while the Alva Golf Club Boys Team was nominated for the Team of the Year Award.
All three of the golf nominations reached the final stages and a small band of golf supporters assembled to hear the results of the judges’ deliberations. There were high hopes for Callum Macaulay, but in the end both he and Scott had to settle for runners-up awards in their section behind the winner – equestrian vaulter Joanne Eccles.
Next up was the 2007 Team Award, and from the four nominations, it looked like the Tullibody wrestlers might take the award with their outstanding performances; and then the result:
“WINNERS -- ALVA BOYS GOLF TEAM.”
The judges were clearly impressed by their achievements - a meteoric rise in the local golf scene thanks to skilful team management and considerable efforts by the boys themselves.
Team manager Davie Allan, boys' team representatives Gary Elliot and Scott Thomson were delighted to accept the award and the accompanying certificates.
Said Davie “This is great for Alva Golf Club and the boys' section. We are already looking forward to the 2008 Golf Season”
Well done indeed and a great credit to the smallest golf club in the Wee County. It was particularly pleasing to see Clackmannanshire golf making a strong showing at the 2007 Awards Ceremony.
