Halfway Stage of EuropeanTour Final Q School

ALAN McLEAN FROM CLYDEBANK STAYS
IN THE HUNT WITH THIRD-ROUND 69
AT SAN ROQUE

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
The Spanish pair of Luis Claverie and Pablo Larrazabal head the field at the halfway stage of the European Tour Qualifying School – Final Stage as prospect of playing on the European Tour gets ever closer on Spain’s Costa del Sol for the top 30 and ties after six rounds.
Claverie birdied the last hole of San Roque Club’s New Course for a four under par 68 to move to eight under par 208 , a score matched by his fellow Spaniard Larrazabal, who posted a round of 71.
They lead Clydebank-born Scot Alan McLean, who shot a 69, and the Austrian pair of Florian Praegant and Martin Wiegele. Prageant, who only got into the Final Stage at the last gasp after being second alternate, made the most of the opportunity with a best of the day 67, five under par, while Wiegele shot a second successive 69.
Claverie, who secured his card for the first time after last year’s Qualifying School, finished his rookie European Tour season in 193rd on The European Tour Order of Merit, but is well on course to bounce straight back.
Starting at the 10th hole of the New Course, Claverie birdied the 12th and then eagled the 16th to reach the turn in 33. A birdie at the second was given back with his first dropped shot of the day on the third but when he birdied the fifth and sixth he was sitting alone at the top of the leaderboard.
However, a double bogey followed on the very next hole before his birdie on the last re-established his position at the head of proceedings.
The 36 year old from Tenerife said: “I played very well today – I am improving every day with my long game and this is giving me more and more confidence. Getting my card here last year is a big help to me this week. I know I can do it. There is a long, long way to go. If I could sign for three 72s over the last three days I would do it right now – no doubt about it.”
Overnight leader Larrazabal also had a day of mixed fortunes as he made three birdies and also a double bogey, on the first, his tenth, on his way to joining Claverie at the top.
“I am hitting the ball great,” said the 24 year old from Barcelona. “I only had one bad hole on the first where I lost concentration with the putter and three putted from five feet. I am playing well enough to be aggressive and go for every pin, but this is not the week to be doing that. I have to make 54 pars and I have a card, that’s the way I am looking at it.”
McLean, 37, whose father Hugh was a printer with the Glasgow Herald newspaper and who is the highest placed player in the Official World Golf Ranking in the field, narrowly missed out on securing a place in the top 117 of the 2007 European Tour Order of Merit. Playing as an Affiliate Member, Alan, pictured above, finished the season in 121st place but he is on course to make amends after a third round 69 took him to seven under par 209.
Praegent got into the field following the withdrawal of England’s Ian Garbutt who was suffering from an eye infection. Prageant enjoyed an impressive amateur career, winning the Austrian amateur stroke-play championship and Swiss amateur open championship in 2005 before turning professional and winning on the Alps Tour the same year. He is hoping it will be third time lucky at the European Tour Qualifying School.
Wiegele is the far more experienced of the Austrian pair. This season he captured the Lexus Open on the Challenge Tour in a play-off with former Scottish amateur champion George Murray and in 2003, his first season as a professional, he took the Challenge Tour by storm in graduating to The European Tour. Wiegele's round of 69 put him on course to return.
A third Austrian is also in the hunt with Roland Steiner, second on the Alps Tour this year, lying at six under par after a 71. He was joined on that mark by three-time European Tour winner Sven Strüver of Germany, who remains on track for a return to the European Tour after a round of 68, and South African Thomas Aiken.
The best score of the Old Course was 69 from Switzerland’s Andre Bossert and Frenchman Jean-Pierre Cixous with Australian Gareth Paddison the lone player on level par on the Old Course after a round of 70.
The next hurdle awaits as the field is cut to the top 70 and ties after Sunday's fourth round. Those who make it through will play the fifth round on the New Course and the final round on the Old, with the top 30 and ties securing the prize of European Tour Membership.
