BRITISH SENIOR MEN'S AMATEUR CHSHIP
SEVENTH AMERICAN SUCCESS IN PAST EIGHT YEARS
Paul Simson, a 55-year-old from North Carolina, became the seventh American in the past eight years to win the British Seniors Open Amateur Championship when he maintained the overnight lead at Saunton, Devon with a closing 76 for 10-over-par 223.
Simson won by five strokes from two more Americans, John Baldwin, the 2002 champion, and Rick Woulfe.
Irishman Maurice Kelly was the leading European, in fourth place after a closing 73, the best round of another very windy day.
“This is a wonderful thing for me,” said Simson. “I feel very fortunate to have won this at the first attempt and it hasn’t really sunk in yet. But it opens many doors for me. It gets me exemption into many USGA events and also into next year’s British Seniors Open. That will probably cost me £5,000 but it will be worth it.”
Robert Stewart (Tulliallan) was the leading Scot with a final total of 236.
