Irishman Robin Dawson loses 3 and 2 in 36 Hole Amateur Final at Balgownie

South Africa Jovan Rebula follows in title-winning footsteps of Bobby Cole (1966)

Jovan Rebula is the first South African to win the Amateur championship since Bobby Cole beat Ronnie Shade in the 1966 final at Carnoustie.
Rebula, 20, nephew of Major title winner Ernie Els, beat Ireland's Robin Dawson from Tramore 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final which latterly was a match between two tired young men.
It showed in the scoring. There was only one birdie from the 19th to the end.
Both men were playing their sixth match-play tie in four days, having played 36 holes stroke-play before that.
Rebula was roughly four over par for the 34 holes of the final, having had to play a lot better earlier in the tournament to survive.
The South African, one up after the first 18, got to five up after 27 holes but a bogey at the 31st and a double bogey at the 33rd extended the match to the 34th where Dawson, three down, ran out of holes to continue his fightback.
