Joint leader on 69 after the first round, Stuart McLaren (Bruntsfield Links) forged clear of the field with a second-round, seven-under 65 for 10-under 134 in the North-east District Open, sponsored by Kings Links Golf Centre, at Newmachar Golf Club.
A suspension of play for approximately 45min, i.e. from 4pm to 4.45pm,  delayed the finish of the day's play and with it the cut to the leading 40 players and ties who qualified for  Sunday's final 36 holes.
Heavy rain for a short spell caused excess water to lie on the 11th green and play was halted until it was squeejeed up by the greenkeeping staff.
McLaren, 22, leader of the Lothians Order of Merit, felt he scrambled a bit to salvage a 69 in the morning but there was no doubting the quality of his play in the afternoon.
"I got home at the par-5 second hole but three-putted for a 5 and that just about the only mistake I made," said McLaren.
"I got birdies at the third, fifth, seventh, eighth, 11th, 14th and 16th without holing any really long putts. I kept knocking my approaches to within 15ft of the hole."
Home-course player Gordon Munro, who had been joint leader on 69 at lunchtime, could not match McLaren's 65 but a two-under 70 for 139 had him in clear second place overnight on 139.

A total of 40 players with 36-hole tallies of 157 and better qualified for Sunday's final two rounds.
