Dalziel beats Greer by one hole to become

Scottish U18 boys' champion at 16

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Greg Dalziel (Airdrie) is the 2017 Scottish U18 boys' amateur champion.
He came from behind to beat Gourock-born, Australia-based Josh Greer in a tense battle between two 16-year-olds by one hole in the 36-hole final at Scotscraig Golf Club, Fife.
Greer was two up at the end of 18 holes, having been two up after only three holes.
Dalziel pulled him back to level terms after nine holes but Greer finished the first 18 holes in command with birdies at the 16th and 18th for a two-hole lunchtime lead.
Dalziel got his teeth into the match at last by winning the 20th with a par and the 22nd and 24th with birdies.
The Airdrie teenager took the lead for the first time with a par at the 29th. The last seven holes of the final were halved.
Dalziel, one under par for the second 18 holes, finished two over par for the 36 holes while Green was four over.
Dalziel had no birdies over the first 18 holes but three birdies over the second 18.

“I certainly didn’t picture this coming into the week, but I came through and held on so I’m delighted,” said two-handicapper Dalziel, a member of the Scottish Golf Academy. “I just dug in and I love match-play to be honest, that helped me.”

Dalziel, a prolific winner in his local junior ranks and coached by Hayston pro Scott Clelland, added: “I’ve won the Scottish Boys Area Team Championship with Lanarkshire the past two years so I drew on that experience. It’s my best experience in the game today – it’s my biggest win to date.”
