Chris Maclean rallies to leadMatthew Clark

down home stretch of Tennant Cup

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) made a brave bid to win the Tennant Cup for the second year in a row, but, having drawn level with nine holes to play,  he was outgunned down the home stretch by Stirling student Chris Maclean (Balmore) who had led by three shots at the end of the third round.
Maclean won a voucher to the value of £500 and a silver medal.

The wind that pushed up the second-round scores at Glasgow Gailes on Saturday abated on Sunday and Maclean was able to follow up rounds of 69 and 77 with Killermont scores of 68 and 69 for a one-over-par total of 283.
Clark led a halfway after a pair of 72s at Gailes for 144 but a third-round 75 knocked him back before he rose again with birdies at the first, third, fifth and seventh, offset by a bogey at the second, to be on the 251 mark with nine holes to play.
Maclean was also on 251 after a bogey at the fourth, a birdie at the fifth but a double bogey 6 on his way to 37 to the turn.
Maclean got his second wind after the turn and birdies at the 13th, 15th and short 16th got him home in 32 to Clark's 35 (bogey at 11th, birdie at 13th).
So the Kilmacolm man had to settle for second place on 286, three behind the winner but six strokes ahead of the man in third place on 292, N A Macrae (Glasgow).
