REPORTS, SCORES FROM MONIFIETH AND SCOTTISH GIRLS AT MONTROSE

ICELANDIC  YOUNGSTERS LEAD FIELD

AT MONIFIETH IN SCOTTISH BOYS'

STROKE-PLAY OPEN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The Ice (Young) Men cometh ... in fact they have arrived in time to be occupying the first two places after the first round of the Scottish Under-18 boys' open stroke play championship at Monifieth Links today.
On their first visit to Scotland, 16 year old Ingaver Magnusson leads with a two-under-par 69, one shot ahead of compatriot Daniel Steinarsson in blustery conditions on the East coast.
“We are pretty used to the wind up in Iceland,” joked Magnusson. “Football is the most popular spot in our country, and our golf season is only really from May to August, but we’re hoping to do well here in Scotland.”
Five players share third place on 73, including one of the home favourites, Callum Bruce (Duff House Royal), Sam Nicholson (Lundin), John Peterson (St Andrews New) and Liam Currid (Bathgate).
Bruce was heading for at least a share of the overnight lead when he birdied the eighth and ninth in an outward, two - under 34. The Banff teenager was still two under par on the 12th tee but it all went pear shaped from there in.
Bruce bogeyed the 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th in taking 39 shots for the inward half.
Last year’s Scottish Boys Order of Merit champion Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly) struggled to a three-over-par 74, as he competes in what is likely to be his last boys’ event.
The Old Ranfurly player said: “I didn’t have any birdies and didn’t play great, but I managed to get it round. The back nine was brutal in the wind. I finished joint-second at Leven last week in the Scottish Champion of Champions and hopefully I can regain that form.”
Last year’s Scottish Boys’ match-play champion, Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links), also posted a 74.
The field of 144 was reduced by one when Nairn's Calum Scott retired after three holes.

KIRSTY BRODIE AND JILLIAN FARRELL

TO THE FORE AT MONTROSE LINKS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Strathmore's Kirsty Brodie, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, and Jillian Farrell (Cardross) kept the home fires burning on the opening day of the Scottish Under-18 girls' open stroke play golf championship at Montrose Links today (Wed)
Kristy shares the lead at the head of an international field of 102 with a one-under-par 72 alongside Germany's Hannah Karg while Jillian is one off the pace in a four-way tie for third place on 73.
Brodie bounced back in great style after bogeys at the eighth, ninth and 11th. She staged a grandstand finish to step into the spotlight with birdies at the 12th, 14th, 15th and17th in an inward half of three-under 34.
Co-leader Karg would have been clear of the field but for double bogey 6s at the second and 10th holes. Five birdies in halves of 36 have her sharing the pole position.
Farrell, winner of a recent Scottish Junior Tour girls' competition, stayed in good form with a bag of six birdies in halves of 36 and 37. Six bogeys cancelled out her gains but she is still in good shape.
Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam, one of the favourites for the title, is still seeking yo recapture the form that earned her selection for the GB and I Junior Vagliano Trophy team a couple of years ago. She had a lacklustre round of 79 with no birdies and two double bogeys.
The leading North-east player with a 78 is Jasmine Mackintosh (Hazlehead) who had an eagle 3 at the par-5 17th.
