Stirling duo set pace after first day of

SSS/BUCS Dundonald Links tournament

REPORT FROM BEN PHILIP
On a very changeable day on the west coast of Scotland it was Stirling University who sit at the top of the men’s and women’s leaderboards after the first round of the 11th SSS/BUCS Dundonald tournament.

In the men’s competition, Colin Edgar (Stirling), pictured, posted a very impressive two-under-par 70 for a one-stroke overnight lead from Chris MacLean (Stirling) with three players a further stroke back at level par.
Edgar used two birdies in the first four holes to underpin an impressive round against the elements.
After a slow start, MacLean fired into contention, coming home in 34 for a 71.
It was not all Stirling, however, with Johann Voss (Durham), Bjorn Bojesen (St Andrews), and Brandon Armitage (Bournemouth) breathing down the leaders' necks from their joint third on 72 position.

Leading the women’s competition is Gemma Batty (Stirling), pictured, whose level par round of 72 sees her two shots clear of Emma Hale (Glasgow Caledonian), with Jen Saxton (Stirling) a further shot back with a 75.
With a blustey wind and near constant rain, it was the consistent play of Batty that impressed, with a birdie and bogey at 9 and 10 splitting 16 pars. Hale managed five birdies, fighting back impressively after two dropped shots in the opening three holes.
Similarly, after a double bogey on the first, Saxton played the rest of the course only one over par to post a 75.
The women's field is spread out behind the top three and should lead to an intriguing second day, with only the top 12 in a field of 17 making the cut.
Round two starts tomorrow from 8.30am; leaderboards are available through Intelligent Golf.
