SEAN LAWRIE FOLLOWS COUSIN CRAIG

AS NORTH-EAST ALLIANCE CHAMPION

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Paul Lawrie's nephew Sean (24) won the 36-hole North-east Alliance golf championship at Craibstone Golf Club today when he added a five-under-par 64 to his six-under-at 66 at Portlethen last week for a brilliant 11-under total of 130 and a five-stroke winning margin.

He follows in the footsteps of cousin Craig Lawrie who won the title 12 months ago but did not defend this year because he played in the Sunningdale Foursomes with his father

"I had only one bogey over the two rounds and that was at Portlethen last week, so that indicates how well I played over the competition," said Sean whose five second-round birdies came at the fourth, 11th, 14th, 16th and 17th in halves of 34 (one under) and 30 (four under).
There is no additional prizemoney for the 36-hole totals but Sean, who is a second-year pro attached to the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stable, won £140 for heading a field of 91 in the second round.
Last week he earned £125 for sharing the top spot with Greig Hutcheon at Portlethen.
It was Lawrie's first success in the tournament. He was joint third last year.
Hutcheon, a previous champion,  soon lost touch with his younger rival after bogeys at the seventh, eighth, 10th and 13th at Craibstone today, and he had to produce late birdies at the 14th, 17th and 18th for a par 69 and a 139 total, to hold on to second place ahead of fast finishing one-handicap Moray amateur Jake Scott who signed off  with a 65 for 138.
Scott, 21,  won the leading amateur trophy. Next week Jake will be playing in the EuroPro Tour Q School at Carrick on Loch Lomond.
