Edmond v Reid in Links final as he bids for record-equalling fifth win

Barrie Edmond (Bon Accord) is one match away from equalling Jack Booth's record of five Aberdeen Links championship final victories.
Barrie (pictured) beat another former Links title holder, Ron Evett (Northern), by one hole in tonight's semi-finals.
Edmond eagled the fourth and the seventh was halved in birdies.
Evett birdied the eighth  to get back to one down.
The  next four holes were halved before Edmond  birdied the 13th to go two up
In a quality match, the 14th and 15th were halved in birdies.
The 16th was also halved, in pars. Then Evett holed from 20ft ton win the 17th with birdie to take the match to the last hole. Evett was on green, about 25ft away from the hole, and was unlucky not to hole his putt.
Edmond was the winner as his tee shot was just 4ft from the pin.
Edmond's opponent in Friday evening's final will be Barry Reid who beat Caledonian clubmate and past Links champion, Alex Cruickshank, by 2 and 1.
Reid was three up with four to play when Alex made a good chip at 15th and holed from 8ft while Reid took three to get down from the edge of the green. The next two holes were halved, leaving Reid the winner.
In the Handicap Shield semi-finals, Liam Minty (Northern) (4) beat clubmate Graeme Robertson (6) by 4 and 3.
Minty played very well and was round in level par
In the second semi- final David Oliver, who plays off four, beat Caley clubmate Walter Ross, also a four-handicapper, by  2 and 1.
Two seniors, Jackie Forrest (Northern) (12) and Graeme Mckie (Caledonian) (11) will contest the Murray Cup final, also on Friday evening.
Forrest beat George Martin (Bon Accord) (16) . Forrest  missed a 4ft putt for a half at the 18th but he played an excellent chip to three feet at the last after coming up short of the green with his tee shot.
Martin was bunkered from thee and could not hole the 20ft putt after his recovery from sand.
In the second semi- final veteran Graeme Mackie (Caledonian) (11) used his experience to beat his younger opponent Sean Stewart (Northern), who also plays off 11, by 3 and 1.

Franssen, Watt and Locke bound for Austria July 5 to 9

North/North-east trio selected to play for Scotland in European boys' team championship

SCOTTISH GOLF NEWS RELEASE
Peebles’ Darren Howie is to follow his brother, Craig, by representing Scotland at the European Amateur Team Championships next month.
Darren, who recently won the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Trophy at Cardrona, has today been named in the Scotland’s Boys’ team for their European Amateur Team Championship in Austria.
The news comes hot on the heels of Craig also being selected for Scotland’s defence of the Men’s European Amateur Team Championship in France, ensuring a notable achievement for the Borders club.
A six-player Scotland team will contest the Boys’ event, this year being held at Diamond CC in Austria from 5 – 9 July, as the young Scots seek to build on last year’s Home Internationals triumph.
Three players from the North and North-east have been selected - Rory Franssen (Inverness), Marc Watt (Inverallochy) and Sam Locke (Banchory)
Inverness’ Rory Franssen, whose highlights this season include leading the strokeplay qualifying at the South African Amateur Championship, and newly-crowned Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Schools Championship winner Marc Watt (Inverallochy) are also in the team.
They are joined by Old Course Ranfurly’s Jamie Stewart, who has posted five top-10s in 2016, and Sam Locke (Banchory), who tied second in the recent Scottish Boys Area Team Championship.
Scottish Boys champion Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links GS) is the only automatic selection from the Boys’ Order of Merit – given leader Sandy Scott has been named in the Men’s side – with the five other players chosen.
The Scotland Boys’ team have qualified for the top eight matchplay flight every year since 2012, finishing third and fifth respectively in the last two years.

Steve Paulding, Scottish Golf Performance Director, said: “We look forward to next month’s European Boys’ Team Championship. Even with Sandy Scott having earned his selection to the Men’s team, I believe we can continue our good run and maintain our strong position in European golf at Boys’ level.
“A number of the players selected for the team in Austria are still very young and have at least a year left at Boys’ level, which bodes well for next year too.”

Boys’ Team (club and age in brackets)

  • Rory Franssen (Inverness) 17
  • Darren Howie (Peebles) 16
  • Sam Locke (Banchory) 17
  • Eric McIntosh (Bruntsfield Links)  17
  • Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly), 16
  • Marc Watt (Inverallochy) 16
The Boys’ team is selected from the leading two players on the Scottish Golf Boys’ Order of Merit and four selectors’ picks.
The Scottish Golf National Squads are sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and TaylorMade-adidasGolf.

Round 3 leader Shane Lowry devastated after poor final round at US Open

Shane Lowry admitted he was "bitterly disappointed" at being unable to hang on to a commanding 54-hole lead in the final round of the US Open.
Sunday started positively for Lowry as he birdied 15 and 17 before completing a third-round 65 which doubled his overnight two-shot lead, but his composure deserted him over the final 18 holes as he slumped to a 76 which left him three shots behind champion Dustin Johnson.
Three bogeys on the front nine added up to an outward 38, and he dropped another shot at the 10th before hauling himself back into contention with a birdie at the long 12th, where he almost holed his pitch for eagle.

But three consecutive three-putts at 14, 15 and 16 effectively ended his challenge, and he cut a deflated figure as he holed out at the last to close on one under with Johnson already confirmed as champion.
"I'm bitterly disappointed standing here," said the Irishman. "It's not easy to get yourself in a position I got myself in today. It was there for the taking and I didn't take it, but you can only learn from your mistakes - I always say it's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

"I'm sure I learned a lot from today and I don't know what it is yet, but when I'm in that position again, and I know I will be, I'll handle it probably a little bit better."
When asked what went wrong having played so well over the first three days, he added: "I just kept on hitting okay shots. It wasn't even great shots, it wasn't even bad shots - I kept hitting it to 25, 30, 35 feet, and on these greens, it's tricky. I kept leaving myself a lot of work to do, and it caught up with me on 14.

"I started a really bad streak there, obviously on 15 and 16 as well. To do that, at that time in this tournament, the more I think about it, the more upset I get. So that's the way golf is. I just hope to get on with that."
Lowry also insisted he was unaffected by the situation involving Johnson after he was made aware mid-round that the American could have incurred a penalty stroke for an infringement on the fifth green - a ruling which was not confirmed until after the tournament.

Three consecutive three-putts from the 14th ended his challenge

He said: "We were told walking on 12, but no, it didn't affect the way I played. If anything, I credit Dustin for playing the way he played on the way in, having that hanging over him, because I probably would have wanted to know straightaway if it was me.
"I was aware of what was going on, and I was just hanging in there. I holed a great putt for par on 13 which was massive, and I had a great number on 14 but just hit a really poor shot and it kind of spiraled out of control from there. It was one of those where I'd give anything to have that wide shot on 14 back again.
"Everything happened quickly, but that's what happens when you play a few bad holes. They're kind of over before you know it and you'd like to have them back again. I was probably a bit hard on myself coming in as well, I think if I had have just relaxed a little bit more, I could have done something a bit better."
