Shepherd leads way with a 66 in Boyd Quaich

Breezy conditions in St Andrews made scoring difficult for most of the field on day 1 of the 68th Boyd Quaich international students' tournament.

With the field split between the Old Course and New Course it was the New which played the more difficult, the lowest scores coming from Callum Cochrane (Newcastle University) and Jo Du Feu (University of South Wales) who both shot level par 71s.
Alasdair McDougall (Mercer University, USA) lies joint second on level par following a 72 on the Old course. However, it was Laird Shepherd from Stirling University who stole the show with an excellent 66 (-6) on the Old Course which included 7 birdies, his only blemish coming on 17.
A total of 14 students, including George Burns from host University, St Andrews, are sitting at +2 or better and will be hoping to reduce Shepherd’s 6 shot lead during Wednesday’s 2nd round.
The field will be cut to 30 players at lunch time with the afternoon 3rd Round taking place on the New Course, followed by Thursday morning’s final round on the Old Course.
Scoring can be followed on the Saints Golf website www.saintsgolf.co.uk
