71-year-old Tom Sirel shoots a 70 to share
seniors' lead at Glenbervie

 By GORDON THOMSON
Tom Sirel (Largs), aged 71, showed the young brigade the way with an excellent score of 70 to share the lead with the holder, Ronnie Clark (Erskine), in the first round of the Central Scotland Seniors Open at Glenbervie today.

Sirel and Clark hold a one-shot lead over Grant McNab (Lundin), Richard Johnston (Glenbervie), David Gardner (Broomieknowe) and Jim Graham (Lochmaben), all on 71.

Order of Merit leader Graham Bell (Downfield) lies a shot further back on 72 alongwith Robin Craw (Glenbervie) and Jalil Aman ( Grangemouth).

Sirel turned in 33 after three birdies and dropping a shot at the ninth. He immediately made up for that lapse with a birdie  at the short 10th but in the run- in dropped shots at the long 15th and the tricky last hole.

Clark made four birdies in compiling his score but also dropped a shot at the last hole.

The chasing pack contains most of the heavyweight names in Scottish senior amateur golf and with 27 players on 75 or lower an exciting day’s play is in prospect tomorrow.
The highly rated Glenbervie course was in fine condition and presented an excellent test for the high quality field.
The CSS was 72  for the par 71 course.
