Paul Lawrie North-east Under-18 boys' championship at Oldmeldrum

Portlethen's Dylan Smith pips home-club hope

Cameron Fraser for Paul Lawrie NE  U18  title

Dylan Smith receives the championship trophy from NE District president David Fleming.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Portlethen's Dylan Smith pipped home club member Cameron Fraser to win the Paul Lawrie North-east Under-18 boys' championship over 36 holes at Oldmeldrum GC today.
Both Smith (72-74) and Fraser (71-75) totalled four-over-par 146 and Smith's better second round was the tie-breaker.
Dylan's iron play stood the two-handicapper in good stead. He hit most of the greens in regulation but admitted he did not putt well. He had a triple bogey 7 at the 10th in his second round but birdies at the 15th and short 17th helped him repair most of the damage.
Fraser, who plays  off 3, required 42 strokes for his inward half in the second round which included double bogeys at the 10th, 15th and short 17th.
Craig Leith (Royal Aberdeen), 74-73, finished third on 147 and Michael Lawrie (Deeside), 74-74, fourth on 148.

The top four will meet in the match-play championship at the same venue tomorrow (Friday) as follows:
8.30 D Smith v M Lawrie
8.40 C Fraser v C Leith.

Ellis Gray (Duff House Royal), pictured right with NE District committee member Angus Lee, won the Under-16 title with rounds of 81 and 70 for 151. His second round (36-34), the best of the day, won him the countback against Paul Chalmers (Duff House Royal) and Ruari Mair (Buckpool) who also totalled 151.
