Malcolm Reid leads the South Seniors at
Southerness with a fine 69 in the rain
By GORDON THOMSON
Senior international Malcolm Reid (Sonning) leads after the first round of the South of Scotland Seniors Open (sponsored by McCrea Financial Services) at Southerness with an excellent score of 69.
Stewart Henderson (Hamilton), playing in his first SSGS event, compiled a fine score of 70 to lie one shot back with Andrew Stracey (Denham), who won the North Seniors earlier in the year, in third place on 71.
Niall Lamond (Balmore), Andrew Campbell (Murcar), Keith Reilly (Silverknowes) and Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth) were on 72 with John Fraser (Royal Burgess), Lindsay Gordon (Turnhouse) and Richard Johnston (Glenbervie) a shot further back on 73.
Weather conditions were difficult with rain for most of the day but that did little to deter Reid, who won the seniors' match-play championship on this course in 2014.
He birdied the fifth and eighth holes but each birdie was followed immediately by a dropped shot.
Southerness is unusual in that it has a par of 69 with a SSS of 73 and the difficult conditions today saw the CSS increase to 74, providing a measure of the quality of scoring produced by the leading competitors.
Fortunately weather conditions are expected to be better tomorrow and that should make for an exciting finish.
