Drumpellier pair win Lombard Trophy trip

to Algarve with net 62 at Cawder

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Drumpellier Golf Club professional Ian Taylor and amateur member Hugh McIntyre earned themselves a trip to the Algarve in September by coming top of a field of 18 club pairings at the Lombard Trophy first Scottish qualifier at Cawder Golf Club today.
Taylor and McIntyre teamed up for a better-ball net score of eight-under-par 62, thanks to an eagle 2 at the par-4 third and birdies at the first, second, long seventh, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th. Their only better-ball bogey came at the 18th in halves of 29 (six under) and 33 (two under).
Taylor's financial reward on the day was £450 and amateur McIntyre received a handsome prize.
But the major prizes, for both professionals and amateurs, will be contested at the two-day Grand Final, hosted by Vila Sol Golf Club, on September 22 and 23.
The total prize fund for the pros there will amount to £41,450 with the winner collecting £12,000.
Today's competition at Cawder was the first of 14 regional finals nationwide. The second Scottish qualifier will be staged at Crieff Golf Club on Thursday.
Only the winners go through so it was so-near-yet-so far for today's runners-up, pro Ken Campbell and amateur partner Lee Mathieson of Machrihanish Golf Club. They shot a net 63 with halves of 31-32. Campbell earned £375.
Three teams tied for third place on 64 with the pros in each pairing earning £275 - Cardross (Robert Farrell and Lee Gibson) 30-34, Gourock (Derek Watters and Gordon McKillop) 32-32, and West Linton (Gareth Wright and Malcolm Ilgunas) 31-33.
