Wolverhampton man sets pace wth

 six-under 64 at Mar Hall

By NICK TEALE
Wolverhampton-based Aaron Rai leads The Glenfarclas Open by one shot after carding a six-under-par 64 for his opening round in the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event at Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort near Glasgow..
Adam Wootton and Craig Hinton, both from Oxfordshire, share second on five-under-par while Paul McKechnie is the leading Scot, sat among the trio of players on four under.
Rai (DCD Group) started his first 18 on the 10th tee of the Earl of Mar Golf Course. A par there was followed by a birdie at 11 and an eagle at the 15th. At 16 he moved four under with a three and further birdies followed at 2 and 3.
He avoided the dangers posed by the remaining holes to return to the clubhouse six under par with a 64.
All six of the players four under or better started their first round at the 10th. Hinton (LJD Technology Services) was five under at the turn after birdies at 13, 17 and 18 and like Rai he eagled the 15th.
He went further below the card with a birdie at 3, but fell back when he double-bogeyed the 4th. A birdie at 7 saw him return to five under, where he concluded the round.
Wootton (Oxford Golf Centre) ended his first nine with three birdies on the last four holes, a par at 17 sandwiched between birdies at 15, 16 and 18 to see him turn three under.
Another birdie came at the 1st before three pars and birdies at 5 and 6. He dropped a shot at 7 but claimed a share of second when he made three down the 8th
Haydn McCullen (Delamare Forest), Gareth Wright (West Linton Golf Club) and McKechnie (Braid Hills Golf Centre) share fourth on four under, two behind leader Rai. There are 11 golfers a further two back in seventh, including Marcus Armitage, who won at Cumberwell Park last month and Mar Hall representative Graham Forbes.
Neil Fenwick (Dunbar Golf Club), Greb McBain (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) and Lloyd Saltman (Archerfield Links golf Club) are the other Scottish players at two-under-par.
The Glenfarclas Open is a 54-hole stroke-play event with a cut to the leading 50 players plus ties to be made after Thursday’s second round.
The final round will be filmed for a two-hour highlights show to be aired on Sky Sports on Tuesday, July 28. Spectator entry is free throughout and live scoring can be found at www.europrotour.com.

Golf Data Lab Scottish youths championship at Irvine GC

MacIntyre lets lead slip over final round -

Norwegian wins title by five

Jarand Arnoy from the Fana Golf Club, Norway kept his head while his rivals were faltering over the final round and he finished up winning the Golf Data Lab Scottish youths championship by the resounding margin of  five strokes at Irvine Golf Club.
He is the first Norwegian to win the title.
He signed off with a steady one-under-par 70 for a 72-hole aggregate of three-under-par 281. He was the only player to finish under par
With 18 holes to go, Oban left-hander Robert MacIntyre looked well on the way to regaining the title he won in 2013.
He shot an excellent morning third round of four-under-par 67 to lead the field by a shot from Arnoy as first and second-round leader Alastair Thurlow (Murrayfield) dropped out of the hunt with a 78, which was followed by a 77. He finished 10th.
But MacIntyre's hopes surprisingly slumped in the final round. He could not conjure up a single birdie and had a double bogey 5 at the short eighth and also bogeyed the fourth, ninth and 12th in disappointing halves of 40 and 36.
The Glencruitten player's five-over 76 for 286 saw him drop into a three-way tie for second place alongside another Norwegian, Lars Sandvoll and Lancashire's Sean Blinkhorn.
Blinkhorn secured the silver medal by way of a better last round, with the other two players picking up bronze.
Liberton’s Kieran Cantley took fifth place on four over par, with last year’s SGU Boys Order of Merit champion, Calum Fyfe from Cawder, a stroke further back.
The general rise in the fourth-round scores was reflected in the CSS, which had been 73 for the first three rounds, going up to 74.

Strickland is three clear at McGregor Trophy
Sussex teenager Charlie Strickland has bounced back from injury to take a three-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the McGregor Trophy at Wallasey, Cheshire.
The 16-year-old (image © Leaderboard Photography) had to withdraw from his last major event with a back injury – but he proved his return to fitness by adding four-under 68 to his opening 69 in the English U16 boys’ open stroke play championship.
He had five birdies, and just one bogey, and commented: “I kept the ball in play, kept patient and let the birdies come on the holes where I could take advantage.”
Strickland (Ham Manor) has played in this event on three previous occasions and has never made the cut until now. His plan for tomorrow’s final 36 holes is simple: “I’ll stick to my game plan, try and focus on my game and see where it goes.”
He’s enjoying good form this season, having been third in the South Eastern junior championship, and fifth in the Peter McEvoy Trophy. He also played in this year’s U16 international against Spain, winning both his matches on the second day.
His closest rival is Norfolk’s Toby Briggs (Dunston Hall) who also scored 68, adding it to his opening score of level par 72.
Briggs, another U16 international, had an eagle three on the long 14th as well as four birdies, including one on the 18th to sign off his round.
His score achieved his aim of getting well into contention in the championship. “After yesterday a lot of players were quite far ahead and I felt there was a bit of pressure that shouldn’t have been there. I had to get all those shots back today,” said the 15-year-old.
Ireland’s Thomas Mulligan currently holds third place on three-under (70 71) while Jack Ainscough (Hartlepool) is a shot behind (72 70) and Benjamin Jones (Brampton Heath) is level par (72 72).

Scottish senior amateur match-play championship at Stirling

Gardner KOs Brotherston on last green in

battle between former champions

By GORDON THOMSON
The perfect weather conditions were matched by the high quality golf on show as the Scottish senior amateurs' match-play championship got down to the sudden-death stages at Stirling Golf Club today.
The tie of the round was the clash of two former champions, David Gardner (Broomieknowe) and Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County) in which the Lothians man prevailed on the last green after a close contest.
In an epic struggle Gordon MacDonald overcame last year’s beaten finalist, Stewart Millar (Cochrane Castle) at the 25th hole, having been two down with four to play.
The leading qualifiers, Joe McManus (Uphall), Robin Craw (Glenbervie) and Laurie Chancellor (Inverness), pictured, advanced to the next round but only after tough tests.
Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) was beaten by George Crawford (Williamwood).
Graham Bell (Downfield) was in commanding form as he beat Alister Raphael ( St Andrews ) but many of the matches were very tight with John Fraser (Royal Burgess) also being taken to extra holes.
The Super Seniors event saw four very good matches. John Broadfoot (Turnberry), who led the qualifiers in this competition, was beaten by Jim Kinloch (Cardross) and second placed, Tom Sirel (Largs) was beaten by last year’s runner-up, David Millar (St Andrews  New).
