Doherty, Neil, Murray blow their European Tour Q School hopes

Shields, Law head 5 Scots still in with a chance

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Jack Doherty (75), Bradley Neil (76) and George Murray (79) virtually wrote off their chances of playing on the European Tour in the immediate future when they were well over par with their third rounds at the 108-hole European Tour Qualifying School final tournament at PGA Catalunya, Girona near Barcelona in north-east Spain.
They are unlikely to survive the cut after the fourth round to the leading 70 and ties.
Doherty is currently on 216, Neil 218 and Murray 225.
So that leave Paul Shields (68 for 205), David Law (68 for 207), Scott Henry and Ross Kellett (both 70 for 210) and Peter Whiteford (67 for 211) as the Scots still in with a chance of finishing the six-round endurance and skill test within the leading 25 and ties who will gain European Tour playing rights.
Surviving the fourth-round cut guarantees 2016 Challenge Tour status.
Shields (tied 26th) and Law (tied 39th) actually lost ground despite their 68s in the third round.
The standard of play at the top of the leaderboard has stepped up a gear and the current leading 25 are eight under par or better, compared with six under par after the second round.
Shields birdied the seventh, 12th, 16th and 18th but dropped shots at the eighth and ninth.
Law had a similar card - birdies at the sixth, seventh, 10th and 16th but bogeys at the ninth and 15th.
Whiteford, the lowest scoring Scot in the third round had an eagle at the seventh and birdies at the firstm third, fourth, 12th and 15th in his round of 67 which also included bogeys at the eighth and 13th.
Neil torpedoed his hope with a triple bogey 7 at a par 4 hole while Murray also had a triple bogey 7 on his card.
At the top of the leaderboard it's Swedish amateur Marcus Kinhult and Lukas Nemecz (Austria) who are joint leaders on 14-under-par 198.
